What We Do
AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan (APSS) is a community-based non-profit registered charitable organization focussed on preventing HIV/AIDS and Substance Use harms. Our goal is to provide those living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C (HCV) and those at risk of contracting infection and suffesring overdoses, with relevant and current information and support services.
Our Programs and Services:
The Client Care program works directly with people living with HIV/AIDS and substance use disorders. Our Client Care Coordinator works with individuals to determine personal needs and together design supportive plans which may include: practical needs (food, clothing), health services (transportation, medication, and nutrition), and support (counseling, support, and treatment).
The Peer Support program offers support for people living with HIV and those at risk for HIV as well as people living with substance use disorders.
Harm reduction programs include Needle Exchange services and condom distribution. We distribute HIV self test kits, drug testing strips and a range of harm reduction supplies through the needle exchange.
Education services offer free or subsidized HIV/HCV/STI presentations to schools, community centers, First Nations communities, and correctional facilities. We provide Naloxone training and distribute kits.
We provide practicums for nursing, mental health and addictions, and social work students and Community Learning Experience for medical students. Practicum students run the Tender Loving Care (TLC) program — offering healthy snacks, education on health/social issues each week, and a quick health checkup (blood pressure/blood sugar).
Our web based reportneedles.ca is a key public safety needle pick up service in Regina which also generates community needle incidence data for research and targeted harm reduction interventions.
APSS serves the larger community of Regina and Southern Saskatchewan in all HIV-related matters. APSS is a registered non-profit charity and is funded in part by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Saskatchewan Health and the Government of Canada, as well as corporate sponsorships and donations. Our sponsors can be found here.
Though APSS was originally established in 1985 as a support group for gay men in Regina, it has over the years grown into a multi-program, multi-staff organization with the goal of reducing HIV, HCV and Sexually Transmitted & Blood Borne Infections (STBBIs) and providing support to people living with HIV infection.
